ABSTRACT
Recent advances in computer technology have parallel advances in imaging techniques.. The improvements in imaging have in turn allowed a higher level of complexity in radiotherapy treatment planning systems. These advances include three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, image-guided radiotherapy and stereotactic radiotherapy. Each of these modalities has improved radiation targeting to tumors while limiting radiation exposure of healthy tissues. This review article outlines principles, technological requirements, and clinical applications of innovations that aim at influencing tumors and healthy tissues sensitive to radiations.
