ABSTRACT

Aim:

The correlation between diabetic age and hemodynamic changes in kidneys; were inves-tigated with common carotid artery ( CCA) and femoral artery (FA) intima-media thickness (IMT) in type-2 diabetics.

Patients and Methods:

As control group, 20 healthy person were selected. As study group, 69 patients with the diagnosis of type-2 diabetes were included. Of these 89 cases, common carotid and femoral arteries were evaluated by B-mode high resolution ultrasonography (US) and mean IMT values were reached for each case. With renal doppler US, resistivity (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) values of interlobar arteries of each kidney, were determined. Diabetic patients were divided into 3 group (Group-1: patients with diabetic age less than 10 years; Group-2: patients with dia-betic age between 10 and 20 years; Group-3: patients with diabetic age greater than 20 years), and mean CCA-IMT, FA-IMT, RI and PI values were calculated. By SPSS programme, mean values were compared between groups; clinical and biochemical variables were determined by means of correlation analysis.

Results:

IMT, RI and PI values of patients in Group-1, 2 and 3 were significantly higher than values of control group. Comparison of groups with each other, revealed satistically significant differen-ce between Group-1 and other groups (p<0.05).

Conclusion:

Intrarenal vascular resistance increase and arteriosclerotic changes in medium-si-zed arteries like carotid and femoral artery were demonstrated especially in first 10 years after the diagnosis of type-2 diabetes.
